CONTEMPORARY DANCE... to Music of the Caribbean with Lourdes del Mar Santiago Lebrón
10:30 AM, Judy Jolliffe Theatre
All of the ways of moving we have ever experienced in our lives exist within our embodied knowledge, we do not simply take off the ballet, to put on the salsa, or take off the reggaeton to put on the Horton. We exist, move, and create within a plethora of spaces that require different ways of moving/dancing. With this consideration, we will champion range in this class.
We will move through a High Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary Dance class to music of the Caribbean. We do this for a couple of reasons! It is rhythmically challenging to put our contemporary movement practices to music meant for percussive social dancing. Secondly, it activates contemporaneity within art forms that cannot fit within one specific category or genre of dance. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, IT'S REALLY FUN

Contemporary Jazz with Monique Haley
11:30 AM, Judy Jolliffe Theatre
African cultural values and principals are the frameworks inside of a contemporary jazz dance space, creating a unique ethos within a dancing community. This contemporary jazz class consists of grounded and athletic movement that inspires the dancer physically and taps naturally into the emotional nature of the artist. Expect syncopated rhythms, undulation, isolations, and active use of plié, weight shifting, and stylized/technical movement within the jazz aesthetic. The dancer will be encouraged to achieve not only a strong focus on style and embodying jazz technique but also to investigate and celebrate the freedom of expression through the body.
